Congratulations Silver Medallion Scholars! To qualify for inclusion, the student must have completed at least 30 hours at a University of South Carolina Campus with a cumulative GPA average of at least 3.0, as well as have achieved a 3.5-3.94 GPA for each of the Fall and Spring semesters in the current academic year while being registered each semester for 12 or more hours on the Sumter campus, of which at least six hours must be USC Sumter courses.

Advancing leadership is an important component of USC's role as the flagship university of South Carolina and its dedication to educating the future leaders of SC, the nation, and the world. USC Sumter had the most Graduation with Leadership Distinction (GLD) students of all the Palmetto College campuses. Students who earn Graduation with Leadership Distinction demonstrate extensive, purposeful engagement beyond the classroom; understanding of course concepts in "real world" settings; and application of learning to make decisions and solve problems.

USC Sumter student Emilee C. Dollard Received the William S. and Elizabeth B. Heath Scholarship from the Central Carolina Community Foundation. The Foundation awarded 123 scholarships totaling $277,544 to some of South Carolina and the country's outstanding students.

USC Sumter Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) Jump Start Students volunteered their time to help feed the hungry as part of a larger operation that served nearly 100,000 needy residents. Jump Start students take an intense University 101 course to get ahead of their studies in the fall. Community service projects are a part of the U101 class and a part of OSP.

Adrienne Cataldo's Early College University 101 class volunteered their time to clean up the Anderson Library Garden on Wednesday, Augist 1, 2017. Located behind the Library, the garden is a secluded area for students, faculty, staff and the comunity to utilize when studying or taking a break. It is home to various statues, plants and even the university time capsule. Student groups donate their time to maintain the garden by pulling weeds, raking and cleaning up debris. Keeping the garden clean makes it a more enjoyable and usable space.

Professor Kris Weissmann's Early College University 101 class volunteered their time to clean up Benton Park on Monday, July 31. Located near the University of South Carolina Sumter, Benton Park is a neighborhood park the university "adopted" several years ago. Student groups donate their time to maintain the park by pulling weeds, raking, cleaning up debris and picking up trash. Keeping the park clean makes it easier and safer for neighborhood children to take advantage of the swings and open green spaces the park has to offer.
