USC Sumter Adds Men's Golf to Athletic Program

Paul Harrington Named Head Coach

by Alethia Hummel

Sumter, SC (10/02/2019) — The University of South Carolina Sumter is proud to announce the addition of men's golf to their six successful NJCAA Region X Division I Intercollegiate Athletics programs.

The new program launched this semester and currently the team includes four local golfers: Bradley Coulter, Andrew Griffin and Brandon Griffin all of Sumter and Grant Kinlow of Manning. Recruitment is ongoing as the season begins in the spring of 2020.

Paul Harrington has been chosen to lead the new team. Harrington hails from Boone, NC but currently resides in Manning. He is a Vietnam Veteran who served in the Army. Harrington was a member of the golf team at Gardener-Webb University when they won the NAIA Championship in the seventies. For the past 18 years, he has served as the Assistant Golf Pro at the Wyboo Golf Club and Assistant Manager at the Crystal Lake Golf Club.

"My goal for the team and athletes is to make them the best person, best student and the best golfer they can be," said Harrington.

"Adding men's golf is the perfect complement to our athletic department since we added women's golf two years ago," said USC Sumter Director of Athletics Adrienne Cataldo. "We are excited about the talent we have on the team for the inaugural year, the interest from student-athletes across the state and southeast, and the support of the Sumter community."

Besides their accomplishments on the field and campus, Cataldo added that student-athletes are well represented in the community and volunteer for service projects with organizations such as the Salvation Army, Evening Optimist Club, Special Olympics, YMCA, YWCA and the City of Sumter.

Current USC Sumter teams include women's golf, men's soccer, men's and women's tennis, softball and baseball. Potential players that are interested in men's golf or any of the athletic programs at USC Sumter should visit www.uscfireants.com for more information.

The Men's Golf team will be hosting a golf outing fundraiser on Saturday, November 9 at the Players Course at Wyboo in Manning, SC. Registration will begin at 9 am with a shotgun start at 10 am. The fee is $50 per golfer or $200 for a team of four. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 and proceeds from the outing will go to support the Men's Golf program at USC Sumter. To register, call Coach Harrington at 803-478-4143, Kyle Gregory at 803-478-2500 or Charlie Gavin at 803-460-7530.
