USC Sumter to Host Constitution Day Program
Sumter, SC (09/07/2022) — The University of South Carolina Sumter will host Constitution Day on Tuesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in the USC Sumter Arts and Letters Lecture Hall. The event is free, open to the public, suitable for all ages, and promises to be educational and fun. There will be pocket-size Constitutions while supplies last.
Constitution Day is an American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. The featured speaker for the event will be Professor Woody Holton, who is the Peter and Bonnie McCausland Professor of History at UofSC Columbia and author of (among other books) Abigail Adams, which won the prestigious Bancroft Prize.
Holton's presentation will focus on his most recent book, Liberty Is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution, which tells the story of the American Revolution with the aid of eyewitness records that shed light on marginalized Americans-enslaved Africans and African Americans, Native Americans, women, and dissenters-and on overlooked factors such as weather, North America's unique geography, chance, misperception, attempts to manipulate public opinion, and disease.
"Constitution Day has become a great tradition at USC Sumter over the last several years, and we really look forward to hosting members of the Sumter community on our campus each September," said Damien Picariello, Ph.D., USC Sumter Associate Professor of Political Science and organizer of Constitution Day. "This year, we're excited to hear Woody Holton talk about the American Revolution."
