USC Sumter Collecting Items for Military Care Packages

Deadline to Donate is February 28, 2020

Sumter, SC (02/20/2020) — The Student Veteran Organization at the University of South Carolina Sumter is holding a donation drive to collect items for military care packages that will be shipped to deployed military men and women who are overseas.

The drive is organized by Nada M. Wilson who is USC Sumter's Military Services Counselor.

"Receiving care packages is always like Christmas while on deployment," said Ms. Wilson. "It is truly amazing when soldiers receive care packages from people other than family members. Knowing that other people take time to think about us makes it much easier to serve and fight for our country."

Some things the group is hoping to collect include non-perishable snacks, personal hygiene products, games and entertainment items. Some of the most requested donations are beef jerky, coffee grounds, protein bars, travel size baby wipes, travel size hand sanitizers, batteries, games for Xbox and Playstation, socks and t-shirts (black, olive green, and white) and linens like pillow cases, twin sheets and towels (olive green or tan). For a complete list of items, please contact Ms. Wilson at 803-938-3893 or morantna@uscsumter.edu.

"As a spouse of a veteran, I know how much it means to a deployed soldier to get a piece of home sent to them while they are away," said Christina Bowers a USC Sumter Student Veteran. "It lets them know someone back home is thinking of them."

USC Sumter will be collecting items until February 28. Collection boxes can be found in many of the buildings across campus, but the most convenient location for the public to drop off is the Williams-Brice-Edwards Administration Building at 200 Miller Road in Sumter.
